Last of the terrace walls….
Following on from our last visit where we infilled the terrace the last piece of wall had to be completed, this went very quickly so my brick laying skills must be improving, or perhaps the fact I wasn’t wearing contact lenses just made me think it went ok!
The yellow pipe is for drainage and was covered with geotextile fabric (to prevent it getting blocked by soil etc) and laid inside the wall. This drainage runs all around the terrace to stop hydraulic water pressure on the walls which is one of the most common caused for garden retaining walls to collapse. Once the terrace gets its final stone slabs any rain water will run elsewhere so this will be redundant but with all the springs in the garden better safe than sorry.
One of the jobs created by finishing this wall was to move the air vent or stack from the fosse septique from the back of the house to the side. This took longer than building the wall. I also extended it to above eves height so hopefully the occasional ‘foul’ smell will be waft quickly away.
