The kitchen window….

After bricking up the third attic hatch in good time yesterday morning decided that the next job was to replace the first of two windows in the kitchen. The window facing south was in the worst condition (actually had a hole in part of the frame!) so with large hammer, saw etc the project started at around 11am……..

Not that we should have been surprised but once we removed the old window frame and revealed the back of the sill and the main oak beam across the bottom we found that there wasn’t much left of wood behind the ‘facade’!

Also the bottom few inches of each of the uprights was also quite rotten. Replacing the entire uprights is a major job (they are morticed and tenoned into other pieces of wood) so after consulting Ben decided to replace the bottoms of the uprights, the sill and the oak beam.

So after lunch a visit was made to the local woodyard and after explaining that I needed three pieces of wood immediately (not next week which was the first response) they cut the wood for me and only charged me 30 Euros!

To cut a long story short at 11 pm the job was finshed (except for cleaning up around the window and plastering the walls. This is what it looks like this morning:

This is the first of three windows I will be replacing, the other three will be replaced by doors onto a terrace (another job for me!).
